Does your child suffer from anxiety? Is your child experiencing exam nerves or problems at school? Does your child have fears or phobias?
Many common childhood problems can be helped by hypnosis. In fact, children frequently find the process of hypnosis easier than adults as they are naturally more imaginative and open to suggestion.
Hypnosis works best for children over the age of about 7 years old. Older children and teenagers may also respond well to BWRT, a non hypnosis based form of therapy. I find that many enjoy learning about their brain and how it works.
Typical areas of concern for children might include:
Confidence Exam nerves Bedwetting Nailbiting or other habits Sleep difficulties Fears and phobias
As children become teenagers and young adults they may have to deal with additional issues such as exam stress, peer pressure, lack of confidence, friendship issues and more, all of which may respond positively to treatment with hypnotherapy.
Especially with younger children a session of hypnosis can seem quite different to one for an adult. The child need not be in a "deep" state of hypnosis and in fact often may not even need to have their eyes closed or appear to be "relaxed" in the typical way. I often use toys, games, and especially stories with children as a way of relaxing them and helping them to tap into their imaginations. Perhaps they are a big fan of Harry Potter, or love to play Minecraft - that's fine, we can incorporate their favourite games or superheroes into the therapy session.
With older children and teens they may be more willing to take part in a guided relaxation session similar to the way I would work with an adult. Positive suggestions and affirmations are used to boost confidence and self esteem. The skills of self hypnosis and relaxation are valuable skills that can be used in all manner of situations.
In some cases especially where anxiety is a factor, I may suggest using Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT) as an alternative to hypnosis. For more details see here or check out my other website www.bwrt.com
When I see a child under the age of 17 for hypnosis I always ask a parent to stay close by, or even stay in the room, although I make sure that the child is the centre of attention and most of my comments and questions are directed towards them and not to Mum or Dad! Parents are more than welcome to discuss the issue with me privately before the session.
All information given to me by a child during a session is confidential and will not be shared with anyone, even the parents, unless I feel that the child is at risk of harm. It is very important that the child or young person comes willingly for hypnosis, otherwise I will not be able to work with them. Of course, if your child has any worries or concerns about coming for therapy I would be more than happy to have a chat with them beforehand to put their mind at rest.
If you think your child would benefit from seeing me and would like to discuss the options in more detail, why not contact me to arrange a free telephone consultation or even make an appointment to come and see me.
