For anyone experiencing infertility, the process of "trying for a baby" can become stressful, frustrating and isolating. If you are experiencing difficulties conceiving, whether or not you are embarking on IVF, you may find a course of therapy helpful.
Unfortunately, fertility levels on the UK are declining and approximately one in six couples may find that they have difficulty conceiving. There may be many underlying causes for this, including lifestyle, genetics, or diet and nutrition. In up to 25% of cases there may be no clear physical reason why a couple cannot conceive, this is known as "unexplained infertility".
What we do know is that stress and anxiety are thought to play an important role. Stress directly affects the proper hormonal functioning of the body in both males and females. It is ironic is it not that the stress of trying to conceive actually has the effect of reducing the likelihood of it happening!
The process of assisted reproduction (commonly known as IVF) is not always an easy answer. Even if you qualify for treatment on the NHS you may only be offered one cycle, increasing the pressure to succeed. If undertaken privately, IVF treatment can be extremely expensive with one cycle of IVF costing between £3-£5,ooo. The process of IVF is in itself extremely stressful, sometimes with unpleasant physical side effects. Not only that, but success rates can be disappointing, around 20% for women aged 39 to 40.
How can hypnotherapy help with infertility?
When working with couples experiencing infertility, my focus is not so much on "getting pregnant" but on reducing stress and helping to increase feelings of positivity and a sense of being in control.
Every couple is different and therapy will be tailored to your individual needs but typically we could work on:
I prefer to work with both halves of a couple and will suggest seeing you both together and individually. However if this is not possible then I am happy to work with one partner individually.
